A fun way to teach solving word problems using sticky notes. This engaging activity will teach children how to represent the information provided in a word problem as as numbers and/or pictures.
Solving word problems is like trying to find out whose the bad guy in a mystery film. You're given some information to help you hone in on certain characters but you have to add all the information up (pun intended). When teaching word problems to your leaner have them think of the problems as stories that they are trying find out the missing details!
Relating it to a story is very helpful because it can make solving word problems more engaging. In today's lesson, I show you how to teach your learner to write down important numbers in word at the beginning, middle, and end of the problem to solve it as well as the key words they need to listen for.
Skill Level
Level 1
Materials
Sticky notes (3 different colors or any other material to write on)
Markers, crayons, or any other writing utensil
Word problems
Process
Say "I'm going to read you a problem and you can help me if you would like"
Read the problem with or to your learner
Say "Now I'm going to read the problem again, this time I want you to listen for the numbers you hear at the beginning, middle, and end of the problem. If you don't hear some numbers it's okay"
Have your learner write the numbers in the order they heard them on the sticky notes
Say "I'm going to read the problem one last time, this time I want you to listen for what the problem is wanting us to figure out."
Talk through the problem with your learner and make sure they listen for key words and phrases such as more, away, some, less, how many more than, etc. Use the best strategy to solve it
