Connecting the Dots From Math to Reading!

Updated: Jul 16, 2022

A fun math activity to wrap up reading 10 Black Dots by Donald Crews

You probably have noticed that my jam is math, and I NEVER talk about reading...like ever.

I made the choice to solely support parents and teachers with math for a few reasons but mostly because there are soooo many phenomenal literacy bloggers and vloggers out there. I realized the math world was the more appropriate space for me.

With that being said, I must say literacy and math go together like peanut butter and jelly! Which is why I have decided to share this fun activity that your learn will love using 10 Black Dots by Donald Crews!

Skill

Math: Count to 120 starting at any number less than 120 (1.NBT.1.1)

Reading: Use illustrations to describe characters, setting, and events (1.RL.1.7)

Materials

  • 10 Black Dots by Donald Crews

  • Mrs. Griffin's Dot Activity Pages (link below)

  • Scissors

  • Glue or tape

  • Crayons, markers, or colored pencils

Procedure

Before reading your text inform your learner you are going to read a book where the narrator is very creative with simple black dots on a page. Let them know that as you read you want them to pay attention to what the narrator decides to create with the amount of dots they have.

During your reading pause at various points and ask your learner "How many dots does the narrator have now?", "What did the narrator decide to do with the dots?", "How many dots do you think the narrator will have next?". Doing this will help your learner describe the different changes occurring in the setting while also strengthening their counting abilities!

Once you are done reading, ask your learner about some of the things the narrator made with dots that they enjoyed. After your discussion, let your learner know they will be creating their own picture with dots!

Depending on your learner, you could provide them the amount of dots they would need to use or you could allow them to choose their amount.

Use my FREE Dot Activity Page to glue on white paper and start your own wonderful dot picture!
